Karatta House

Karatta

Karatta Wine Company is named after Karatta House, one of Robe's well-known heritage listed icons on the shores of Lake Butler. Henry Owen Jones, a grazier from Binum Binum station, built Karatta House in 1858 as a summer holiday residence. Unfortunately due to financial difficulties he did not complete the building.

Mr Jones' creditors rented Karatta House to Sir James Fergusson, the then Governor of South Australia, as a vice regal summer residence. Sir James was the only South Australian Governor to have lived in Robe, thus Karatta House became known as the Governor's Residence. Sir James built the outside kitchen and servant's rooms during his occupation, which are located to the western side of Karatta House. The next tenant to occupy Karatta House was grazier Robert Stockdale, who completed the building.

David and Peg Woods purchased Karatta House in 1988, and chose the name to link the history and the fine architecture of the house with Robe's first Winery.
