We purchased Karatta House in 1988, and chose the name to link the history and the fine architecture of the house with Robe's first Winery. We believe these features relate to our company's aim of producing elegant and fine wines.
The Cellar Door and Winery are situated on the Robe-Penola road about one and a half kilometres past the Beachport turnoff. It has been named the 12 Mile Winery, as it is where the Chinese immigrants who landed in Robe first camped on their long trek to the Victorian gold fields. The 12 Mile Winery is the first and only winery in the Robe Wine Region.
Karatta Wines has two vineyards:
- "Tenison Vineyard" located close to our original farm "Frog Island" which has been in the family for over 30 years. Established in 1997, Tenison Vineyard is named after a family relative and local identity. Father Julian Tenison Woods. The Vineyard is ideally situated on the east facing slopes of the Dairy Range. The terra rosa soil over limestone produces premium grapes.
- "12 Mile Vineyard" which we acquired in 2003 in association with the 12 Mile Winery. This vineyard is 12 miles from Robe on the Robe to Penola road, and is near the first camp used by the Chinese trekking from Robe to the Victorian Goldfileds. The maritime climate with warm to hot days and a cooling breeze at night provides excellent conditions for premium grape production.
Both vineyards have the famous terra rosa soil over limestone. Being close to the coast of the Great Southern Ocean they also have the benefit of a maritime climate with long ripening periods.
